Each project we undertake is designed as a unique piece for the client.

The design stage of a project is of the utmost importance. It is then that your project will take shape, from an idea to a final drawing.

During this process we will discuss ideas, explore the possibilities of the space, and decide on the technical form that the work will highlight.

Inspiration can be drawn from any number of sources, from existing architectural details to a whimsical motif. We like to take as much information from you as possible and then blend your ideas and wishes into workable design.

Every project we undertake is designed in house.

Depending on distance, we can make a visit to site, or work from drawings and photographs to establish the feel of the location.

After a meeting and consultation with the client we can begin the design stage in earnest.
At this stage a 10% non refundable retainer, based on an approximation of the projected cost, is required.
The retainer will allow us to create the concept sketches and samples and a final scaled drawing (drawings and samples remain property of Jake James Artist Blacksmith Inc.).
We will then draw up an estimate for the project and begin work as soon as a down payment is received.

The production stage of a project has us in our element, as the idea on paper becomes a three dimensional reality.

On most large projects we work extensively with 2 other blacksmithing outfits in the San Juan Islands. By bringing together 50 years of forging and metal working experience, with access to 3 well equipped shops, we provide the highest possible quality in design, workmanship and speed in completing your commission.

We keep you informed of our progress and will maintain a photo journal of our work for you to see. You are also welcome to make a visit to the forge during this stage.

Installation is the final stage in the process, and is billed separately from the production cost of the project.

We take great pride in seeing a project through to completion, and it is often necessary that we carry out the installation work ourselves to ensure a perfect finish to your commission.
